Senior Mechanical Engineer
Interlune is a space resources company based in Seattle, WA. We will provide resources from space to power a clean and sustainable economy on Earth and in space.
We are looking for a Doer who wants to join our early-stage team and accelerate humanity’s progress toward an off-world future. Our engineering team combines expert knowledge of geological sciences, mechanical engineering, automation, systems engineering, modeling and simulation, and advanced fabrication to build the infrastructure that will create an in-space economy. To join our small team, you must be agile, willing to learn, and able to take on multiple roles as needed.
This role will report to the Vice President of Engineering and bring significant expertise in space robotics, particularly for planetary surface operations.
Applicants from all industries are welcome, with particular emphasis in complex, multi-disciplinary system development.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the design of high-reliability mechanisms, actuators, linkages, and robotic systems for mobility and excavation operations in space.
- Drive hardware development from concept development through the design, analysis, prototype, test, and manufacturing phases.
- Engineer hardware that survives launch and surface environments: dust abrasion, thermal cycling, shock/vibration, and off-nominal loading.
- Build and test the systems you design; full end-to-end responsibility.
- Develop requirements with systems, robotics, thermal, and geological science teammates.
- Create drawing packages, 3D models, GD&T, and interface definitions. Conduct structural FEM analysis and performance estimation (torque, power, life).
- Lead design reviews and support qualification and environmental testing.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical subject area.
- 8+ years of progressive responsibility in robotics and complex electromechanical systems development.
- 5+ years of professional CAD experience (SolidWorks, Creo, NX, etc.).
- Demonstrated experience as a technical lead, owning all aspects of the design life cycle (concept to flight/production)
- Strong GD&T skills and experience releasing manufacturing drawings.
- Hands-on experience building, assembling, and debugging hardware.
- Experience with motion control systems, sensors, and instrumentation.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic work environment.
Desired Qualifications and Skills:
- Significant, direct experience designing, building, and testing planetary robotics hardware (e.g., robotic arms, deployable mechanisms, rovers).
- Demonstrated expertise in designing and analyzing mechanical systems for highly abrasive, dusty, or high-wear environments, including tribological considerations (wear, friction, and sealing).
- 5+ years of experience in structural/modal Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using tools like ANSYS or FEMAP, or experience with vibratory, shock, and modal environmental design verification.
- Knowledge of mining engineering or planetary geology.
- Project leadership experience in space, robotics, industrial, or heavy-equipment environments.
Export Control Regulations
To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicants for employment at Interlune must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e. current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
